The New Breed of Luxury Airlines
Airport hassles and flight delays have become a way of life to everyone who flies regularly on business.
But transatlantic road warriors are increasingly finding there is something they can do about it--for a price.
A new breed of airline will fly you between major U.S. and European cities in considerable comfort and privacy on an airliner filled only with fully reclining business-class seats or first-class mini-suites. There are no screaming kids.
Depending on the airline you choose, you'll find your plane has only 40 to 100 seats.

Three reasons why Qantas missed a branding opportunity with A380

Three reasons why Qantas missed a branding opportunity with A380
Qantas became the third airline to take delivery of the Airbus A380 aircraft last Friday, after Singapore Airlines and Emirates. Qantas has ordered 20 A380 planes from Airbus, the first of which will enter service from October 20, initially flying between Sydney/Melbourne and Los Angeles but in January next year expanding to the Sydney-Singapore and Sydney-London routes. But the fanfare and buzz is nothing close to that generated by Singapore Airlines’ first A380 flight to Sydney or Emirates’ A380 flight to New York City.
Given the significance of being one of the first few airlines to operate the Airbus A380, and since it will once be the 2nd largest operator of the A380, it’s a mystery why Qantas has not capitalized on this event to build its brand further. Moreover, given the recent negative press generated by the string of Qantas safety lapses, there is an urgent need to repair the damage done.

We look forward to operating the 787 and benefiting from its advanced performance features. Until then, the 767-300ER is the economical and logical choice to fulfill our interim capacity targets and our growth plans.”

Israel's Arkia plumps for the 787 after all
Israel's Arkia plumps for the 787 after all
Arkia first ordered the 787-8 and later cancelled the order and got its deposit back. Now its parent company, US-based Nakash Group of America, announces an order for 2 787-9s plus two options. Delivery is set for 2012 - unless they cancel again.
What is of some interest here is that ElAl also ordered and then cancelled 787s. Also of some interest - what happened between Airbus and the Israelis? Is this a market Airbus finds more impenetrable than Japan?

France urges Airbus to build A350
After two years of tinkering (more political than technical we think), Airbus is no closer to taking on Boeing in what is emerging as the sweetest spot in the market. Airbus has a group of amazingly loyal customers. No A350 customers have defected and Airbus has even been able to add customers that already ordered the 787 (Singapore).

Sukhoi wins order for Superjet 100
Bloomberg -- Sukhoi, a unit of OAO Sukhoi Aviation Holding, won a $170 million order from Dalavia Far East Airways (based in Khabarovsk, Russia, on the Chinese border) ordered six mid-range Superjet 100s with an option for four more.
In the small world of 100-seaters this is news. Embraer is very busy and Bombardier still does not have a plane this size. Every month that goes by without Bombardier's Cseries being launched means another month for Embraer - and now Sukhoi to take orders. Sukhoi is doing all its business in Russia and appears to have sold over 100 - if the orders are credible.

Airbus breaks Israeli drought
Airbus breaks Israeli drought
Israir buying two A320s making it the first Israeli airline to operate Airbus planes.
Israir has signed an MOU to buy two Airbus A320s, with an option on a third, for $150 million. A final contract will be signed in a few weeks. (We have not been sent any official Airbus PR on this yet).
Israir will receive the planes in 2010. Meanwhile, the airline will lease planes from Airbus, making it the first Israeli airline to operate Airbus. Airbus will apparently provide a complete support package, including training for air and ground crews.
With this breakthrough we think A330s for New York service might not be far behind. This is great news for Airbus. It is far more important than order size.

Oasis Hong Kong Airlines to cease operations
Oasis Hong Kong Airlines (Hong Kong) is expected to make an announcement at 2 pm local time today that it will cease operations because of losses. It is reported that the airline has accumulated losses as much as $128 million USD and loses more than $128,000 USD per flight. Oasis began flying to London in October 2006 and added services to Vancouver a year ago in a bid to challenge Cathay Pacific Airways (Hong Kong). It initially offered tickets to London Gatwick for as little as $128 USD one-way, less than 20% the price then charged by Cathay Pacific for flights to Heathrow. With the price of fuel surging upwards by more than 73% in the past year, Oasis would be joining several other airlines in the past month in ceasing operations.

Oman Air will be attending the 41st Annual General Meeting of The Arab Air Carriers Organization (AACO) to be held in Tunisia this month. Mr. Peter Hill, Oman Air’s CEO will be heading a high-level delegation to the meetings. AACO, which was established in 1965 within the framework of the Arab League of States, aims at promoting cooperation among Arab airlines and serve their common interest through service excellence. An important event for the airline industry, AACO AGM is attended by Arab and International air transport industry leaders. The official opening ceremony of the AGM will be held on the night of 21 October 2008 at “Kobbat Al Nohas”, an old seat of the Bey of Tunis. The ceremony will see a Senior Government Official addressing the audience, in addition to AACO President, Mr. Nabil Chettaoui, and AACO Secretary General, Mr. Abdul Wahab Teffaha. The event which will be concluded on the 23rd of October will be punctuated with meetings, working session, discussions and joint sessions, addressing some of the crucial issues impacting the industry. In the past AACO has been instrumental in arriving at many joint decisions and action plans that have been beneficial to the member airlines. Peter Hill, Oman Air’s CEO gave notice that AACO member airlines will have a closed session to decide on several strategic, financial and administrative issues, AACO secretariat general work and the joint issues related to member airlines. Hill said that one of the important highlight of this year's event is the Discussion Panel which will have industry dignitaries and experts taking part and referred to as the ‘Joint Aviation Forum’ under the theme: "An Expanded Role of Arab Aviation: Challenges and Opportunities". The steady growth posted by the Arab airlines and industry he added, have been the focal point of many global airline companies.

QANTAS has introduced its first Airbus A380 into service, becoming the third commercial operator of the superjumbo after Singapore Airlines and Emirates. The first flight departed Melbourne en route for Los Angeles at 11:15 am local time on 20 October. The airline took delivery of the aircraft in September and initially used it for training. The A380 is now also being used on some Sydney-Los Angeles services and will commence operations to London via Singapore in January. Qantas has another 19 A380s on order up to the end of 2013 and expects to take delivery of two of those aircraft this year, with another five arriving in 2009.

Japan Airlines has become the fourth airline in a year to use biofuel during a test flight.
The hour-long Boeing 747-300 flight was powered by 50 per cent traditional jet fuel while the other half came from a biofuel blend.
The airline industry is developing second generation fuels from nonedible products, after fuels made from edible plants were criticised.
Biofuel used in the latest flight at Tokyo airport was a mixture of camelina (a kind of flax), the flower jatropha and algae.
Algae is seen as an especially promising material because ponds with a combined total acreage equal in size to Belgium would be enough to meet all demands from commercial airlines across the globe

"Airways - A Global Review of Commercial Flight, November 2001". I wrote an article about the introduction of the new longhaul airliner, the Airbus A340-300, in SAS. A total of four pictures were published as part of the article, three of which are shown here. All three photos shows SAS' first A340-300, SE-REA, during introduction in August 2001. This aircraft has since been re-registered LN-RKF.

In January 2001, a very interesting and highly qualitative book with the title "LINJEFLYG - from start to landning" was published (written by Michael Sanz). It describes the history of the classic Swedish domestic airline LINJEFLYG, emphasizing the stories from the people who made LINJEFLYG to such a success story. I was fortunate to be allowed to give my (small) contribution to this publication in the form of three photos of Linjeflyg airplanes. The photos shown below have all been choosen for illustration in the book

Qatar slashes fuel surcharges 8:49 AM :: 0 Comments :: :: Airline News, UAE/Gulf
DOHA: Qatar Airways has reduced fuel surcharges on flights in its international network. The decrease in the fuel surcharge on short- and long-haul services in the airline’s global network follows an earlier reduction implemented by the airline in December on tickets for one-way and return flights from Doha,
The airline says the move reflects "the return to stability in oil prices over the past few months" following an unprecedented surge during 2008. Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker said Qatar Airways’ fuel surcharges had been significantly lower than those of other airlines. "We have absorbed a large percentage of the increase in fuel prices in the past, passing very little onto the consumer.“In response to the recent reduction in oil and jet fuel prices, we are now pleased to lower the fuel surcharge substantially in our network, which demonstrates our commitment to the travelling public by offering highly competitive prices.”
